Failing the Exam by Dylan Price

To be a President

Joe Biden and Donald Trump

More similar than different
Two white men about 80 years old
Who are politicians
Who have had long, successful careers
Who have plenty of money
Who have big beautiful families
Who love playing golf

Why do we ask them to do this?

Two men
Raised on the virtue of success
And the value of power
We taught them that their highest aim in life
Was to be adored and hated
By millions

To be a President
Is to be forced to forget who you really are
To have your one chance at happiness
Stolen
By the ballots

What would it take
For you to not see
Your child’s eyes
In the little Palestinian boy
Or the immigrant’s daugher?
Can you imagine?

We did this
We told that little boy to forget who he was
He forgot
And became a President

Now it is our job
To remember
